Under King Casimir the Great, who ruled from 1333 to 1370, Poland was modernized and in 1364 it became the first university in the country. In the year 1386, Poland and Lithuania were merged into the Polish-Lithuanian Empire. In the years that followed, the country had a turbulent history and was several times part of other neighboring countries. In 1989, Poland became a completely independent country thanks to the efforts of, among others, Lech Walesa. Poland belongs to the European Union today and, for example, to the United Nations.
